LIKE A BLIND MAN WITH SEARCHING HANDS

When she started losing her memory (but that’s not right: I can only really say ‘when I noticed she was starting to lose her memory’) she began to use her hands a lot. She’d get to a familiar place and start touching whatever was on the table, or a shelf, like a child, the kind of child you have to ready the house for, hiding certain things or placing them out of reach. She would pick something up and then set it back down but not quite in the place where she had found it, just slightly to the right, or to the left, like someone wanting to correct a mistake through rearrangement. All this in silence and absolute concentration. I never asked her why she was doing it, even though I did say a few times, again, as to a child, in irritation, ‘Please don’t touch anything.’ It was hard for me to acknowledge that she had begun to rely, instinctively, on tactile memory. Like Greta Garbo from Queen Christina, she was remembering objects not to store them in her mind, but to orient herself in the present.
